For part 2 see Abst. 4914, Vol. 31. 3. For 3 weeks 7 groups of 8 laying hens received a ration with 16% maize. In a second period of 3 weeks a ration without maize caused yolks to be paler. Up to 30 mg beta -carotene per kg feed did not affect yolk colour; with 0.70, 1.05 and 1.75 g lucerne extract per kg yolks were significantly darker. In the next period all groups received the ration without maize and yolks were again pale.
