The effects of different water-regimes on the growth of plants under glass. IV. Vegetative growth and fruit development in the tomato

An investigation was made to determine the effect of soil moisture conditions on the relationship between vegetative growth and fruit development of the tomato plant under glasshouse conditions. Greatest vegetative growth was obtained with a small fruit load under conditions of high soil moisture. Conversely, weakest vegetative growth was found with a large fruit load under conditions where the soil was allowed to dry out between irrigations nearly to the permanent wilting point. Water-regimes and fruit load treatments were found to be additive in their effect on vegetative growth.
