The importance of determining moisture content in the grading of copra with particular reference to the reduction of subsequent insect infestation

The need for critical grading of copra, particularly in relation to storage deterioration, is mentioned and some previous work on this subject is cited. The summarized results of a warehouse storage trial and a supplementary laboratory experiment, both carried out in Jamaica, are presented. These show the extent of deterioration and weight loss after six months' storage for well dried, underdried, and marginally dried copra, and the influence of copra moisture content on the survival of, and the degree of damage caused by, specific pests. It is emphasized that although proper drying of copra will substantially reduce damage by insects, it will not eliminate insect infestation completely, and the need for investigation of the suitability of synthetic insecticides for treatment of bagged copra is mentioned.
