The influence of nitrogen fertilization on yield and its components in wheat

The influence of nitrogen fertilization on yield and its components in wheat

Indian J Genet Plant Breeding 23(3): 241-249

Twenty varieties of wheat (Triticum aestivum) were examined for response to N fertilization at three levels 60, 120, and 180 lb/acre, combined with three levels of P, zero, half of and equal to the N dose. Yield response was observed to N as well P. For interpreting the results, treatments N60 P60, N120 P120 and N180 P180, which gave the maximum yield, have been considered as medium, high and very high fertility levels, respectively. The increase in grain yield was mainly due to an increase in the number of ears per plant, while grains per ear and 100-grain weight contributed little to increasing the yield. Wide varietal differences to fertilizer response has been observed. E.G. 953, N.P. 825, Cometo semiduro, Hy. 65, R.S. 31-1, Gabo, S. 54723 and N.P. 790 have shown continued response with the increasing dose of N. R.S. 31-1 has shown the highest increase of 50% at the very high fertility level. Two varieties, Charter and S. 2414, responded negatively. C. 591, E.G. 1440 and S. 54887 did not give any yield response at the N120 P120 level, but the response was good at the N180 P180 level. The other varieties gave yield responses only at high fertility level and thereafter the response declined. The increase in yield in almost all varieties at different fertility levels was due mainly to an increase in the number of ears per plant. The fall in yield of some of the varieties was due mainly to the reduction in the number of grains per ear and in 100-grain weight.
