The mechanism of resistance to potato virus Y infection in Capsicum annuum var. Italian El

Natural resistance of C. annuum var. Italian El to infection with potato virus Y has been linked with the presence of an inhibitory substance in the leaves. Transmission to susceptible plants, both by aphid and mechanical inoculation, was significantly reduced by application of Italian El juice to the leaves. The inhibitor was effective against tobacco etch virus also, but not against cucumber mosaic virus or tobacco mosaic virus. Treatment of exposed aphid stylets with concentrated Italian El juice did not significantly reduce infectivity of the aphid. It was concluded that the inhibitor affects the host plant and not the virus. Stylet treatment with other materials gave generally similar results.
