The number of bacteria, actinomycetes and fungi in the layer beneath the ploughed layer is 50-80% of the number in the ploughed horizon. In the ploughed layer there are 3-20 million bacteria per g of dry soil, 0.1-3.0 million actinomycetes and 7-120 thousand fungi. High liming rates have resulted in large azotobacter populations.
