Plants were grown from commercial seed of Kleinwanzlebener polybeta, and at various growth stages they were examined for number of chloroplasts per pair of guard cells. Within each grade of polyploidy, the pairs of guard cells of the cotyledon contained 18% fewer chloroplasts than were present in (the average for) all other leaves of the plant. In these latter leaves, the deviation from the mean of the number of chloroplasts in the pairs of guard cells was 10%, at the most.
