In trials with lucerne, ladino clover, Festuca elatior, Bromus inermis, timothy and alsike clover (Trifolium hybridum), dry-matter and protein yields in mixed stands were higher than in rows of pure stands. Growing legumes alternating with grasses in single, double or treble rows did not control the legume/grass balance of the whole stand. A spacing of 6 inches between rows of grasses and legumes gave higher yield of dry matter and protein than where rows were at 12 or 18 inches apart.
