Advantages of mixed cropping given include: (a) an increase in the foliage area per unit of land area by mixing shade-tolerant crops, e.g. soyabean, potato, with photophilous ones e.g. maize; (b) an extension of the photosynthetic period by undersowing cotton or maize between wide-spaced rows of a crop with a late growing period in the spring e.g. winter wheat; (c) an improvement in the utilization of soil nutrients; (d) a benefit from the nutritive effect of root excretions, e.g. the excretions from pea or lupin radicles promote the release to the plants of P from the soil.
