From examinations of about 18, 000 inhabitants the High Altai oblast could be divided into 3 zones with severe, moderate or low incidence of endemic goitre; persons with goitre of grade III to V made up, respectively, 18 to 21.8, 11 to 17.2 and 6.6 to 9.1% of the population. For 10, 9 and 11 samples of air-dry soil in those 3 zones mean contents of I were 1.9, 2.3 and 3.9 mg per kg, of F 61.0, 82.0, and 52.0, of Co 5.1, 4.1 and 5.6 and of Cu 6.4, 3.7 and 7.0 mg per kg.
