Three strains of Streptomyces aureofaciens producing chlortetracycline (CTC) were treated with CTC at varying concentrations and a strain of A. rimosus producing oxytetracycline (OTC) with OTC. There was a direct proportionality between survival and the activity of the strain in producing the antibiotic in question. Various morphological mutants that occurred naturally all had reduced antibiotic activity; their proportion was reduced by increasing doses of the antibiotic.
