New-born (mostly 2-4 days old) piglets, of which 17 were naturally infected with E. coli and ten had TGE, showed acute serous inflammation of the intestinal mucosa, with neutrophile participation, mainly in the jejuno-iliac portion. In coli enteritis, swelling of the epithelial cells (which retained their columnar appearance) and slight subepithelial serous exudation were observed.
