A comparison of the tube agglutination, supplemental, and brucellosis ring tests in selected dairy herds in NewYork

The standard tube agglutination test was performed on serum from 36, 902 cattle in 645 New York dairy herds shown to be negative in the ring test. Two cattle (titres 1: 200) were classed as reactors and 475 as suspect (titres 1: 50-1: 200), but further screening by serological tests (acidified plate antigen, rivanol plate and c.f. tests and a test using 2-mercaptoethanol) and finally bacteriological tests in these and another 1499 non-suspect cattle with titres of 1: 50 in the tube agglutination test showed that none of the cattle was actually infected. It was concluded that the ring test alone was sufficient to detect all cases of brucellosis and that additional periodic blood tests were unnecessary.
