A cytophysiological investigation of the effect of low temperature on the leaves of potato species differing in their frost resistance

The mechanism of frost injury was studied in laboratory trials in Solanum schreiteri, a frost-resistant species, and in S. tuberosum Priekul'skii Rannii and an inter-specific hybrid 'Olev', both frost-susceptible. Supercooling reduced protoplasm movement and caused the chloroplasts to become spherical. Sudden formation of ice resulted in rapid coagulation of protoplasm and leaf death.
