A survey was made of 6935 dairy herds on the incidence of intersucking (the habit of calves sucking one another). 13.8% of dairy herds were affected, and on average, 29.7% of calves within an affected herd were involved. The proportions of herds with 1st calf heifers or older cows affected were 1.4 and 1.1% respectively. The best remedies were separation after feeding, mechanical devices, dry lot feeding and avoiding grouping of calves until > 4 wk old.
