Accumulation of organic matter in some New Zealand soils under permanent pasture : I. Patterns of change of organic carbon, nitrogen, sulphur, and phosphorus. II. Rates of mineralisation of organic matter and the supply of available nutrients

N.Z. J. agric. Res 7: 445-471; 472-479

The pattern of accumulation in time of organic C, N, S and P was studied in 10 soils under permanent pasture. Accumulation of organic matter and the consequent immobilization of N, S and P were general in the top three inches while net mineralization occurred in the next three inches, if at the time of plowing the soil had reached a steady state. In eight soils immobilization of N, S and P exceeded mineralization; only in one were changes found below 6 inches.
