Amino acid imbalance, protein intake, and changes in rat brain and plasma amino acids

Young adult male Holtzman rats were kept in darkness for 12 h nightly during which time they were fed freely on 2 successive days with agar-gel diets containing casein 6, methionine 0.3, threonine 0.2%; casein 75%; 6% of an amino acid mixture devoid of histidine; or 9% of an amino acid mixture devoid of threonine. All diets contained maize oil, vitamin mixture, choline chloride and a mixture of equal parts of starch and glucose monohydrate. Food was not offered during the day.
