An evaluation of five insecticides for the control of late-season cotton pests in Uganda

A trial, conducted at Namulonge Cotton Research Station during the 1966/67 season, is described. A blanket treatment of 10 weekly applications of DDT at 1 lb/acre per application was made with a Uganda Long Boom followed by 7 further applications of 2 lb. carbaryl, 1/2 lb. fenitrothion, 1 lb. DDT, 1/4 lb. endrin and 1 lb. endosulfan with T-booms. Results were compared with plots which received no further insecticides. Carbaryl gave good control of Dysdercus spp. but none of the insecticides gave any control of Cryptophlebia leucotreta (Meyr.). None of the treatments reduced the amount of dirty or unpickable cotton. Carbaryl, endosulfan and fenitrothion gave good control of Aphis gossypii Glov. and endosulfan gave some control of Tetranychus sp. (telarius group).
