The effect of N deficiency from leaf number 69 to 92 (43-20 days before heading) on root activity was investigated in plants grown in both water and sand culture. In water culture, root activity increased as the air content of the water increased and as sulfate content decreased; in the absence of N, root activity declined but reducing the N supply by 80 or 90% had little effect. Reducing the N supply did not affect root activity in the field.
