The optimum stages for top-dressing direct-sown rice with N to obtain maximum increase in yield components are: (1) number of panicles per unit area, most active tillering; (2) number of spikelets per panicle, neck-node differentiation; (3) percentage of ripened grains, full-heading; (4) 1000-grain weight, just before reduction division of pollen mother cells. The practical application of these results is discussed.
