Basal dressings and top dressings of N at panicle formation did not always affect total N content of rice plants, but top dressing at heading increased total N by 15-30%; grain yields also increased. At heading, total N increased with increase in amount of N applied. Total N was lower in milled than in brown rice, indicating that increased protein content was stored in the endosperm.
