Annual rings in Oak as an indicator of long-term climatic cycles

Lesoved., Moskva. 1, 15-23

A study was made of the frequency of occurrence of included sapwood in 1100 Quercus robur (early-flushing variety) aged 20-250 years in natural high forest and plantations near Moscow. Microscopic studies were made on the annual rings of defective wood from 100 trees, and the relation of the defect to climate (temperature and precipitation) is discussed. It is concluded that formation of rings of abnormal structure is due to the combination of prolonged drought followed by a hard winter.
