Eight groups, each of 10 castrated males and 10 gilts, were self-fed from weaning to about 88 days of age on pelleted diets with 87 to 96% barley and small amounts of either soya bean meal, bloodmeal, tankage or fishmeal, and adequate vitamins and minerals. For 4 groups the diet had 16% protein to 100 lb liveweight and then 13%, and for the other 4 it had 14% throughout.
