Biological characteristics of growth and development of apple trees in espalier culture

Biological characteristics of growth and development of apple trees in espalier culture

Izvestiya Timiryazevskoi Sel'skokhozyaistvennoi Akademii, Moscow, USSR, 3, 111-121

Trees of the apple cvs Melba, Papirova and Grushovka Moskovskaya grafted on M.3 rootstocks were trained as espalier palmettes (3 types) or were left free growing. After 8 years individual free growing trees had larger crowns and total leaf area than the espalier palmettes but the total leaf area/ha was significantly larger in the latter.
