Body composition of young sheep. 2. Effect of stocking rate on body composition of Dorset Horn cross lambs

Body composition of young sheep. 2. Effect of stocking rate on body composition of Dorset Horn cross lambs

J. Agric. Sci, 72: 77-84

The effect of plane of nutrition on the growth and body composition of 142 lambs from Dorset Horn x Border Leicester x merino and Dorset Horn x merino ewes was studied. During the first 6 weeks of life lambs from Dorset Horn x merino ewes grew twice as fast at the lowest stocking rates as at the highest. These lambs did not grow as fast as those from the triple cross. Lambs at the high stocking rate took longer to reach slaughter weight.
