Five phenotypically different and simply inherited X-ray mutants were intercrossed. In an analysis of the segregates significant differences were noted for several quantitative characters both among and within the hybrid families showing the same macromutant pheno-type derived from different mutant cross combinations. It was concluded that the background of the parental macromutants had mutated.
