Japanese Journal of Nutrition 28(6): 254-257

School children aged 12 to 14 years were studied in Japanese urbanised farm villages and in mountain villages. In farm villages girls grew better than boys and in mountain villages boys grew better than girls. Both sexes together grew better in farm villages and less well in mountain villages than the average for Japan. Girls took better food in wider variety and a more regular and balanced diet than boys. Boys tended to omit breakfast in farm villages and dinner in mountain villages.
