Compensatory hypertrophy of the mammary gland in the guinea-pig following the extirpation of the paired organ

After extirpation of the right mammary gland in virgin guineapigs during dioestrus, the contralateral mammary glands from 39 experimental and the mammary glands from 28 intact control animals were removed (i) 5-70 days after unilateral mastectomy, (ii) at different stages of pregnancy and (iii) on the 2nd, 10th and 20th days of lactation.
