Competition for nutrients and light between the annual grassland species Bromus mollis and Erodium botrys

Competition for nutrients and light between the annual grassland species Bromus mollis and Erodium botrys

Ecology 49(5): 981-90

ISSN/ISBN: 0012-9658

DOI: 10.2307/1936549

Competition between Bromus mollis and an associated forb Erodium botrys was studied under controlled conditions. When crowding was not intense and competition was primarily for sulphur, growth of E. botrys was much greater than in pure stands while that of B. mollis was markedly less. Under a low sulphur regime, E. botrys acquired a disproportionate share of the available sulphur owing to its more rapid root extension.
