Abstract
Thirty-two Friesland cows were fed to appetite on a diet with 20% roughage for 42 days after calving and then got restricted amounts of diets with 5, 20, 35 or 50% roughage for the remaining 254 days of lactation; 3 cows with fistulae were used to estimate apparent digestibility of each diet. All cows lost weight until the 10th week of lactation and then there were small gains by all cows except those given 20% roughage.
