Concrete below carnation beds

Concrete below carnation beds

Agriculture. Lond., 73: 344-6

The construction is described of simple ground-level concrete beds and of elevated beds made from hollow clay building blocks. The beds permit the growing of carnations in sterilized Verticillium wilt-free soil. The elevated bed is supported about 4-6 in. above soil level; it is more expensive to construct than the traditional ground-level beds but obviates the risk of concrete cracking which would expose the crop roots to the unsterilized soil beneath.
