Lactation records collected between 1934 and 1966 on 133 Sinhala, 37 F1 of Jersey x Sinhala, 13 F2 of Jersey x Sinhala, 28 F1 of Friesian x Sinhala, and 28 F2 of Friesian x Sinhala were analysed. Records for F1 of Jersey x Sinhala and the reciprocal cross were found to be similar, and were pooled. For the 5 groups resp., av. milk yield was 1255, 2674, 1779, 3460 and 2171 lb, av. lactation length 224, 313, 273, 327 and 302 days, av. calving interval 391, 370, 412, 393 and 448 days, av. gestation length 281.0, 277.4, 279.6, 276.9 and 278.3 days, av. age at 1st calving 44.8, 36.6, 38.3, 36.9 and 38.5 mth, and av. birth weight of calves 30.4, 34.9, 38.5, 37.4 and 43.3 lb. Repeatabilities were higher in low-production groups than in high-production ones. The levels of significance of inter-breed group differences are tabulated. The correlations between lactation length and milk yield were 0.81, 0.66, 0.84, 0.60 and 0.78 resp. ; over 4 lactations and for all groups the correlation was 0.65; it decreased from 0.75 in the 1st to 0.50 in the 4th lactation. Perinatal mortality was higher in Friesian crossbreds than in Jersey crossbreds, and increased from the F1 to the F3 generation of calves.
