Bull. Wld Hlth Org 38(3): 484-488

The recent dramatic increase of Culex pipiens fatigans in West Africa is attributed to urbanization and to the use of chlorinated insecticides which have reduced the other mosquito species which were formerly dominant. The biology of C.p. fatigans is reviewed with particular reference to the authors' work in Upper Volta. It is concluded that C.p. fatigans is not as yet an effective vector of Wuchereria bancrofti in West Africa, but that it soon may be.
