Two types of male sterility in wheat were investigated: (a) pollen sterility and (b) functional male sterility. Meiosis was normal in both cases. Studies on tapetum development indicated that in plants with sterile pollen, the tapetum did not function as a nutritive layer to the developing pollen. The nondehiscence of anthers in the case of functional male sterility appeared to be attributable to the presence of a thick, hard anther wall.
