During early anther development meiosis and microspore formation were similar in fertile and sterile species of Citrus. In the fertile species, C. granais and C. natsudaidai, the tapetum started to break down soon after the liberation of the microspores from the tetrad wall, and almost degenerated when the vacuoles were disappearing from the microspores.
