Chromosome numbers are reported for selected and unselected progeny from S. officinarum (2x) used as the maternal parent in crosses with 64, 80, and 96-chromosome clones of S. spontaneum and for progeny of S. officinarum pollinated by Erianthus arundinaceus and E. procerus. Crosses of S. officinarum with 64 and 96-chromosome clones of S. spontaneum resulted in hybrids with chromosome numbers equalling the sum of the maternal somatic and the paternal gametic number (2n + n).
