Developments in the pig industry

Tijdschr. Diergeneesk, 94: 1437-1446

Between 1938 and 1968 the av. number of pigs per farm rose from 6.0 to 51.4, and the total pig population from 1, 537, 783 to 4, 682, 525. The 7.892 million pigs slaughtered in 1968 provided 627, 050 tons of meat. The av. breeding unit consisted of 20 breeding sows each producing 15-16 piglets per year. Mention is made of the use of Swedish Landrace for crossbreeding to give larger litters, fewer stillbirths, and piglets with greater vitality and better growth and food conversion rates.
