Abstract
Maize was grown for 32 days to a height of 170 cm, then harvested, chopped and ensiled in PVC bags buried in soil for 21 days, using 0-2% glucose as additive. Silage with added glucose was of good quality, pH 3.3-3.5, NH3-N/total N ratio 2.0-3.7%, compared with pH 4.6 and 17.6% NH3-N for the controls. Much nitrate-N disappeared during ensiling.
