Abstract
Total volatile fatty acids in rumen fluid sampled every 2 weeks did not differ significantly between groups, though peak values were higher in the weaned calves. They increased with age. Ammonia N also was similar for the groups and the highest value was at 3 weeks. NPN and urea N in blood were related to ammonia in rumen contents, and did not differ between groups.
