Effect of an admixture of Birch and Caragana arborescens on the decomposition of forest litter/humus and on the growth of Pine in plantations in the central-chernozem region of the forest-steppe

Lesn. Z., Arhangel'sk 12(3): 166-8

A study was made of Scots Pine plantations aged 18-27 years, with an admixture of 15-20% Betula verrucosa or 20-50% C. arborescens. The broadleaved species accelerated litter breakdown and increased the pH of the litter/humus. The litter/humus of the mixtures contained more NO3 and NH4, than the pure Pine plantations.
