In field trials in Dnepropetrovsk province, Ukraine, ploughing to a depth of 34-36 cm delayed the emergence of C. picris shoots in maize by 23 days compared with ploughing 22 cm deep and ploughing to a depth of 27-30 cm delayed it by 11 days. Ploughing to 27-30 cm increased yields of maize by 2.7 hkg grain per ha and deeper ploughing (34-36 cm) increased them by 3.8 hkg compared with ploughing to 22 cm.
