Effect of early administration of Fe upon the weight gain of suckling piglets, their digestion, and utilization of sows' milk and creep feed

Effect of early administration of Fe upon the weight gain of suckling piglets, their digestion, and utilization of sows' milk and creep feed

Z. Tierphysiol. Tierernahr. Futtermittelk 22(3): 133-40

Half of each of 6 Belgian Landrace litters (56 piglets) received at 3-5 days of age an injection of 200 mg Fe as iron dextran/piglet. They and the untreated controls had no other access to Fe. The piglets were weaned at 8 wk by which time the treated ones weighed on average 15.9 kg, had a blood haemoglobin content of 11.6%, and consumed 44, 330 kcal of sows' milk (mean 1, 063 kcal/kg milk) and 8.0 kg creep feed, vs. 13-3 kg, 7.4%, 37, 821 kcal and 6.3 kg respectively for the controls.
