Effect of grass competition and depth to water table on height growth of coniferous tree seedlings

Effect of grass competition and depth to water table on height growth of coniferous tree seedlings

Ecology 49(4): 597-603

In a further study of the behaviour of seedlings of Pinus banksiana, P. resinosa, Picea glauca and P. mariana, the plants were grown in two sloping tanks in a greenhouse in combination with three grasses on (a) a loamy sand, and (b) a sand, each tank forming a small catena with a controlled water table. With an equal water supply, a much greater total vegetative production was achieved on (a), but this did not result in greater tree-seedling heights.
