Effect of nitrogen fertilization and plant spacing on yield and composition of Napier grass in the dry tropics

Napier grass responded to applied N in the production of increased yields of dry forage and protein. The added N, at the rates applied, was utilized, perhaps, in the production of dry forage, rather than in producing significant increases in protein content and yield. There was a marked seasonal effect on the yield and composition of forage. The results of these trials indicate that the optimum yield of Napier grass for the dry tropics may be achieved through the use of N applied in moderate amounts in split applications to coincide with seasonal moisture supply. The marked seasonal influence on yield and composition of forage should be considered in the cutting management of this highly productive perennial bunchgrass as a source of roughage.
