Effect of population and row spacing on the performance of four corn (Zea mays L.) hybrids

In field trials in 1966 and '67, 4 early maize hybrids were grown at populations of 30, 000, 45, 000, 60, 000 and 75, 000 plants/ha at each of 4 between-row spacings of 50, 65, 80 and 95 cm. Row spacings did not affect grain yield but each increase in population markedly increased grain yields, except in a dry year when the optimum population was 60, 000.
