Effect of potassium and magnesium fertilization on the yield, size, maturity, and color of Elberta peaches

NO detectable differences in yield were obtained from applications of K or Mg to peach trees during the first 5 years after treatments were initiated, but thereafter effects appeared to be accumulative. The application of either K or Mg was associated with a highly significant increase in the weight of fruit harvested per tree. A similar response in number of fruit harvested was obtained but with Mg the increase was not significant. The application of K or Mg was associated with a significant increase in the production of peaches greater than 2-1/4 inches in diameter. Treatments resulted in a delay in maturity of approximately 1 day for each increment of fertilizer added. Red coloration of the fruit was improved by K fertilization, while Mg fertilization diminished the redness. Results indicate that the level of Mg and especially of K required for optimal production is much greater than that needed to aleviate visual deficiency symptoms.
