Moneymaker tomatoes were grown in a 0.25% modified Hoagland and Arnon solution, with nitrate-, ammonium- or nitrate-ammonium-N sources, trace element addition and pH adjustment. The pH had a greater effect on plant growth and dry matter accumulation than the N source. At the pH levels (4 to 8) of the solution tested nitrate N had the most favourable and ammonium N the least favourable effect.
