Red pepper varieties 2640, 621 and Chonan were sown in hot beds on 25 February, 10 March and 25 March and in cold beds on 10 and 20 April. The seedlings were planted out in May and June. The February-sown plants began flowering 30 days earlier than the mid-April-sown plants. The time between sowing and flowering decreased with later sowing dates although the results were variable for the different varieties. The highest yields were obtained from the earliest sowing times.
