Effects of nitrogen source, phosphorus fertilization, and lime in Leon fine sand on growth and chemical composition of tomato plants

In a greenhouse experiment conducted on Leon fine sand with Manalucie tomato plants, (NH4)2SO4 was inferior to NaNCO3 as a source of N on soil treated with 250 pounds CaO per acre. However, on soil treated with 2,500 pounds CaO per acre, the two N sources were equal. The higher rate of lime produced larger plants than the lower rate. Also, plants responded better to 200 lb P applied per acre than to 20 lb. Phosphorus content of tomato tops was considerably less in plants using (NH4)2SO4 on the 250-lb lime rate than in plants using NaNO3. However, roots on plants in the 250-lb lime rate had a much higher P content using (NH4)2SO4 than NaNO3. This suggests a translocation blockage and a subsequent accumulation of P in abnormal roots.
