Beef and veal production in the Netherlands is mainly a by-product of the dairy industry with a total of 1.75 million dairy cows producing some 1.8 million calves, of which some 775 thousand (mainly male) are slaughtered as veal and another 790 thousand (80 per cent. female) at various ages for beef. Imports, exports and production in the Netherlands are compared with those in other European countries and elsewhere.
